Russia has banned the sale of Samsung Galaxy smartphones

The news is rapidly spreading through the media that the Moscow Arbitration Court has banned the import and sale of 61 models of Samsung Galaxy smartphones in Russia. The court satisfied the claim of the Swiss company Sqwin SA, which accused the Korean corporation of patent infringement. We explain what is happening and why you shouldn’t worry.

We are talking about a patent for the “Electronic Payment System”, the author of which is a certain Viktor Gulchenko. Sqwin SA is convinced that the Koreans used a technology patented by them to create their own Samsung Pay service. The court banned the legal entities of Samsung Electronics Rus Company LLC and Samsung Electronics from selling goods equipped with the Samsung Pay function back in July, but the list of specific models was not approved at that time. After the plaintiff’s repeated appeal, an additional decision was made.

The following models are included in the forbidden list:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip;
  • Samsung Galaxy Fold;
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2;
  • Samsung Galaxy S21, S21 +, S21 Ultra 5G;
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, S20, S20 +, S20 Ultra;
  • Samsung Galaxy S10e, S10, S10 +, S10 Lite;
  • Samsung Galaxy S9, S9 +;
  • Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 +;
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, S7;
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge +, S6, S6 Edge;
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Note 20 Ultra;
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Note 10+, Note 10 Lite;
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9;
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8;
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5;
  • Samsung Galaxy A72, A52, A32, A41, A71, A51, A80, A70, A50 (128GB), A40, A31, A30s, A30, A50 (64GB), A20, A9 (2018), A7 (2018), A8, A8 +, A6, A6 +, A7 (2017), A5 (2017), A3 (2017), A7 (2016), A5 (2016); Samsung Galaxy J6 +, J4 +, J7 (2017), J5 (2017).

Samsung representatives have already said that they do not plan any changes in operating activities due to the litigation and will appeal the verdict in a higher court.

Experts write that the ban does not threaten the company with serious consequences, since Sqwin SA is engaged in patent trolling, and Samsung can, if not win the next court, agree with the government and continue to sell its smartphones in Russia. “There is no point in pushing such a player out of the market,” says Leonty Bukshtein, editor-in-chief of the Mobile Communications magazine. According to the specialist, Samsung has never had insoluble conflicts in Russia, they were the first to agree to pre-install domestic applications on smartphones and, in general, enjoy the loyal attitude of the authorities.
